House Meeting is a monthly programme shaped by and for artists with a connection to Renfrewshire. It offers a space to come together, share creative practice, build connections and support one another through conversation, workshops and collective learning.
Many cultural venues are closing while others are just beginning. What do we want from a cultural space? How can these spaces contribute to our understanding of the world while also benefiting our health and wellbeing?
We began by mapping cultural venues that have closed recently or whose status is uncertain. We considered the language used around learning, community and engagement in these venues and decided it is often extractive and doesn't truly reflect the needs of folk. It was interesting to see the overlaps with these words - access and funding.
Inspired by our rich discussions, we then created a venue that we wished existed. We made in small groups to begin with before combining our creations. Our venue had beautiful architecture as well as masses of outdoor space. Inside we had a dark room for films, cosy space for reading and dog-care areas.
